WEEKLY VISIT TO THE MUSEUM

WEEK #6

February 10, 2021

“Lithuanian Hymn” by Vincas Kudirka

“Lietuvių Hymnas” (Lithuanian Hymn) by Vincas Kudirka, published in Riga, Latvia in 1906

The censorship of the Lithuanian press continued into the 20th century. But the first decades of the new century were rife with change and pending revolution. This sheet music is a testament to that time. The “Lithuanian Hymn”, the country’s national song, was printed in 1906 not in Lithuania but in Latvia, and the music is printed with the approval of the censorship administration of St. Petersburg, Russia.
This project is partially supported by grants from the Illinois Arts Council Agency, Illinois Humanities, the City of Chicago, CityArts, and other Museum donors and members. The Balzekas Museum gratefully acknowledges them for their support and welcomes everyone to contribute to its mission: to preserve and perpetuate Lithuanian history, culture, and traditions.

This virtual exhibit is supported in part by grants from the following:

The Balzekas Museum gratefully acknowledges these grantors as well as the members and private donors whose contributions support museum programs and activities.
