Handwoven national costume

On display in the Women's Guild Room of the Balzekas Museum
Lithuanian Americans, like many other ethnic groups, maintain customs, traditions, and folk life. Ancient fairy tales, folklore, myths, dance, song, humor, and superstitions, among others, all play a role in the culture Lithuanians impart to the next generation. Among the Museum’s collections imbued with traditional or folk culture are national costumes, decorated Easter eggs, and Christmas tree decorations.

This costume, owned and worn by the Honorable Josephine Daužvardis, Consul General of Lithuania, is from the Žemaitija area of Lithuania. It is made up of a skirt, apron, vest, blouse, and headpiece. The colors and the patterns in the weaving determine the origin of a costume. Thus the colors and designs used in this costume may vary greatly from those from another region of Lithuania.

This virtual exhibit is supported in part by grants from the following:

City Seal of Chicago
Illinois Humanities
Illinois Arts Council Agency

The Balzekas Museum gratefully acknowledges these grantors as well as the members and private donors whose contributions support museum programs and activities.
