Eleven Lithuanian Athletes
Bringing all Lithuanians Together: the World Lithuanian Congress
In 1935, led by the Society to Aid Lithuanians Abroad, Lithuanians planned a congress with the goal of fostering cultural, economic, and sports relations between Lithuanians living abroad and in their country of origin. The Congress took place in August with 2500 delegates and guests taking part. Among those delegates were eleven Lithuanian American athletes. Selected by the Lithuanian Olympic Committee and sponsored by the Lithuanian business community, the basketball players from America won overall European teams. After the Congress, several Lithuanian Americans remained in Lithuania and trained Lithuanian athletes and future players. With the participation of these and additional athletes from the U.S., Lithuania’s strengthened and revived basketball team won the European Basketball Championship in 1937 and 1939.
