The seven Baltic plays found in this book are based on the Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian folklores. They have been written and produced in their original languages during the last seven decades. Their English translations are of recent vintage, and they have not been produced on the English speaking stage expect for one, The Golden Steed ( under the title, The Golden Horse) which was produced using an earlier translation from its German version by the well known theater and film actor/director, Michael Chelhov, England four decades ago.
The primary goal of this collection is to facilitate a study of the aesthetic value systems distinctively Baltic, as well as to show how these people develop their ethical health through fairy – tale enchantment.
Alfreds Straumanis – is an Associate Professor of Theatre ar Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Drama from Carnegie Institute of Technology.
